To add this type of device, go to the Control Panel and select the "Scanners and camera" icon. Select "Add Device." Follow the Wizard's instructions. At one point, you may have to insert the manufacturer's disk to find the hardware's drivers. Continue with the wizard and this should get you up and running. If your device uses something called a TWAIN interface, then you will not use this process. Third party software that comes with the device controls the installation and functioning. Just follow the instructions that come with the device. - Michael Vincent     АDirect Cable ConnectionDCC Protocols Connecting two computers together via cables is no easy task. If you have attempted to do this using the Windows Direct Cable Connection (DCC) wizard and are still experiencing problems, then it could be because of a missing protocol. Right-click on the Network places icon and select the Configuration tab. Add the protocol IPX/SPX. After adding, select it within the Configuration tab and click the Properties button. Now, bind IPX/SPX to the Dial-Up adapter on BOTH the host and guest computer. - Michael Vincent     АProtected Storage|Users get message "Protected Storage has detected data created with a previous version. A brand new Gigaflexor SCSI hard drive with 400 Gigabytes of space! The price is $300 and they have a ton of them. You check out the box, and it's really pretty with lots of graphs and charts and cool numbers like "3,000 RPM" and a 20 ms access time! Wow, that's got to be good! Should you buy it? In a word, NO! With that kind of price and speed, you should be getting a much better hard drive! How do you know? Here are some simple hard and fast rules: 1) RPM is how fast the disk spins in the drive. You want at LEAST 5,400. If you can get 7,200, then great; the fastest can go at 10,000! 2) Access time is the average "seek" time. How long does it take to find the information you need? 9 ms (milliseconds) is good, but you can get better! 3) One number missing from the boxes is transfer rate. This is how fast the disk can get information to the computer. Do some comparisons, and remember, the higher the better! 4) Finally, know your system. SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) drives are more expensive, require special hardware, and operate differently. Most computers use IDE, or EIDE drives. SCSI is superior to IDE, but for most folks, it's too much for what they need. - Michael Vincent     А Installing    А !Installing New Components, Part 1ZWell, you finally went out and bought that new CD burner you've been hearing about. Before removing it from that shiny box, follow these simple rules to upgrade to your PC: 1) Always allow yourself plenty of time; never rush 2) Back up your system 3) Make sure pets and children are kept away from the open PC 4) Make sure computer and peripherals are ALL unplugged 5) Make sure the PC is off, and has been off for several hours before opening 6) Never touch any exposed components in your PC without "discharging" (Discharging means that you touch something metal to remove static electricity. One zap of static can literally kill a computer) 7) Follow all the instructions to the letter, since even "insignificant" steps that may seem unimportant can be essential 8) Don't hesitate to consult an expert if you get stuck - Michael Vincent     А !Installing New Components, Part 2ZAfter you have installed your new component, place the cover back on your PC and reconnect everything. Turn on the PC and make sure it boots. If your system crashes before Windows even begins, STOP! Turn off the PC and unplug it and have a professional take a look. Unless you know exactly what you're doing, you can cause a great deal of damage. - If Windows begins and the component is PnP hardware compatible, Windows should recognize it right away and install drivers. If you need to install software, follow the manufacturer's instructions. - If Windows does not recognize the hardware, go to the Control Panel and select the Install New Hardware icon and follow the instructions. If it still cannot find the hardware, contact the manufacturer for instructions. The fix may be as simple as downloading the latest driver. - Michael Vincent     А !Installing New Components, Part 3ЮOnce the hardware and software are installed, you might still have some problems. Before doing anything else, go to the manufacturer's Web page and see if there are updated drivers on a list of FAQ or troubleshooting tips. Also, you can go to the Control Panel, select the System icon and then select the Device Manager tab. Your new component should be listed under the appropriate device heading. If you see an exclamation point, then you have a problem. If needed, press the [+] symbol to open the device's "directory." Now, right-click the device and select Properties. Here you'll find a series of tabs and choices depending upon the product type. Go through the tabs and see if any error messages appear. If possible, you might be able to fix the problem at this juncture. If not, make a note of the specific errors and look in the manual or contact the manufacturer for instructions. - Michael Vincent     АJava    АUninstalling the MS Java VMThe Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (MS Java VM) handles Java applets on web pages, compiling and executing them. Currently Microsoft no longer supports the MS Java VM, and preinstalled machines with Windows XP and Service Pack 1a (SP1a) come without it. Older machines still have the MS Java VM. The Sun Microsystems Java VM is a replacement for the now obsolete MS Java VM. Instructions on replacing the MS Java VM with the Sun Java VM are as follows: Click Start, Run and enter: RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall Click Yes to confirm the uninstall, and restart your system when it's complete. Delete the following if they are still present: The folder c:\windows\java c:\windows\inf\java.pnf c:\windows\system32\jview.exe c:\windows\system32\wjview.exe Click Start, Run and enter regedit to start the Registry Editor. Browse to the following keys, highlight and delete them: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Java VM HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVAVM * For Windows NT4 and Windows 2000, replace c:\windows with c:\winnt. * For Windows 95, 98, 98SE and ME, replace c:\windows\system32 with c:\windows\system. You can now download the Sun Java VM from here: http://www.java.com/     АMouse    А Mouse Keys Let's say you're on a business trip with your laptop. You are busily using your laptop when suddenly an eagle swoops down and takes your mouse. OK, maybe that's ridiculous, but you get the point. Your mouse is gone! How can you move your pointer around? Windows 98 and Me can help. Go to the Control Panel (you have to do this before losing the Mouse) and select the Accessibility Options icon. Go to the Mouse Tab and check the "Use Mouse Keys" option. Click the settings button. Check the Use Shortcut box. Change the pointer speed to something that's reasonable (the slow is SLOW!!!). Click OK, followed by Apply. Now, press the Alt + Shift + Num Lock buttons and you can use your numeric keypad to move your pointer instead of a mouse controller. - Michael Vincent     АNetwork    А Logon FixьOn a DHCP Network I had some Computers that would loose their IP Address once a week and I would have to uninstall the TCP-IP in the Control Panel and then I would have to Install it again so I wrote this Batch file that you can just run and it will do the same thing. I just put the echo Have a Nice Day Mr.Bower so it would stop and Give then a nice Greeting you can change the name or don't have it at all. Then I used Bat2Exe to compile it to a com file so nobody could change anything. If you do a search on the Internet Bat2Exe is Free and it's all over. Searching for a resource is all fine and good, but repeating this process can quickly become arduous. To minimize this, you can actually "map" the drive, and assign it a drive letter on your PC. To do this, double-click Network Neighborhood and select the computer/file you want to frequent. Right-click the resource and select "Map Network Drive." A screen will pop up and ask you to assign a drive letter. Many times, work groups will have a specific drive name designated to commonly used resources, so this should be your first choice. After assigning the drive letter, make sure you check the "Reconnect at Login" option, and click OK. Within Explorer, this resource will now appear as a drive. - Michael Vincent     АNetwork Neighborhood/You can view all of the available resources on a network within Windows Explorer by clicking Network Neighborhood. This list also shows the structure and printers available on the Network. Be careful when browsing: Network activity is often monitored, and resource intensive. - Michael Vincent     АSystem    АInstant System Properties°If you have a Windows keyboard with the special Windows Key on it, you can press the special Windows button and the Pause button located at the top right of the keyboard to instantly open the System Properties dialog box. - Michael Vincent     АMoving System FoldersгYou have an option within Tweak UI to move special system Folders from their default location to a different place on a different drive. Located within the My Computer tab of Tweak UI is the folder's name in a dropdown box, a location text box, and a Change Location button. With this, you can move system files to a different folder or a different drive. There is almost no reason to do this. So even though you might be tempted to shift things around, my advice is to leave the system folders alone in their default locations. Click here to get Tweak UI! http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTwea UI.asp - Michael Vincent     АPower Management#If you use a desktop computer, then you probably don't need Power Management support. Mainly computers left on for more than 24 hours and laptops use this option. To disable this feature and save some CPU power, go to the Control Panel and select the System Icon. Click the Device Driver tab and double-click the System Devices. Towards the top, you will see an item called Advanced Power Management Support; double-click this. In the General tab, make sure that the "Disable in this Profile" is clicked. Click OK. - Michael Vincent     А Windows 2000    А$After ghosting new drive can't LogonоAfter ghosting new drive on Windows 2000 system, user gets an error message when they try to logon to their system. Error: Limited Virtual Memory Your system has no paging file, or the paging file is too small. When you click OK button, you are put back in the logon screen. Solution: This problem occurs if the drive letter for the boot partition changes on the computer. Try the following to fix the problem. If the computer is networked, run regedit on another computer to open and modify the following key: Change From: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon\Userinit:RegSZ:C:\WINNT\system32\userinit.exe Change To: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon\Userinit:RegSZ:userinit.exe After you change the above registry entry, you should able to logon to your system. Now, you need to re-assign the proper drive letter to your boot partition and reboot. 1. Start Regedt32.exe 3. Go to the following registry: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDrvices 4. Go to Security menu, click Permissions. Make sure the administrator has full control access. 5. Quit Regedi32.exe and start regedit.exe. 6. Go to the following registry: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices 7. Find the drive letter you want changed. Look for \DosDevices\D: 8. Right click \DosDevices\D: and click Rename. 9. DMA (also referred to as bus mastering) is a technique that some components and devices use to transfer data directly to and from memory without passing through the Central Processing Unit (CPU). DMA reduces CPU overhead by providing a mechanism for data transfers that do not require monitoring by the CPU. The number associated with DMA indicates the direct memory access channel that the component or device uses to transfer data to and from memory. The following topics are included in this article: Determine if DMA Is Enabled on Your Computer How to Enable DMA for a Hard Disk How to Enable DMA for a CD-ROM MORE INFORMATION Determine if DMA Is Enabled on Your Computer By default, DMA is enabled for hard disks on Windows 98-based and Windows Millennium Edition-based computers, but it is enabled only with some specific versions of Windows 95 that are listed below. First, determine if DMA is enabled on your computer. NOTE: If DMA is already enabled, you do not have to perform any of the following steps. For additional information about how to determine if DMA is enabled on your computer, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: Q141497 How to Use Device Manager to Check the Status of a Resource DMA support for Windows 95 is available in Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) versions of Windows 95. If you purchased Windows 95 (the full or upgrade version) from a retail store, you have a retail version of Windows 95. Retail versions of Windows 95 cannot be upgraded to OEM versions, and there is no separate download to enable DMA support in retail versions of Windows 95. If you have an OEM version of Windows 95 that does not have DMA support, contact your OEM. To determine the version of Windows 95 you are running: Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System. On the General tab, locate the version number in the System area, and then refer to the following table. Release Version File dates DMA support Windows 95 retail 4.00.950 7/11/95 no Windows 95 retail SP1 4.00.950A 7/11/95 no OEM Service Release 1 4.00.950A 7/11/95 no OEM Service Release 2 4.00.1111 (4.00.950B) 8/24/96 yes OEM Service Release 2.1 4.03.1212-1214 (4.00.950B) 8/24/96-8/27/97 yes OEM Service Release 2.5 4.03.1214 (4.00.950C) 8/24/96-11/18/97 yes If you are running an OEM version of Windows 95, the product ID number under the Registered To heading typically contains 20 digits. If digits 6, 7, and 8 contain the letters "OEM," your version of Windows 95 is an OEM version. For example, the following sample product ID number indicates an OEM installation: 12345-OEM-6789098-76543 OEM Version Identification Windows 95 may have been preinstalled on your computer. These installations are referred to as OEM installations. An OEM Service Release (for example, OSR2) is an updated version of a product for personal computer manufacturers (OEMs) to preinstall on new personal computers. This allows OEMs to install an integrated Windows 95 product that contains the latest available individual updates and supports recent advances in hardware that require core operating system support. Additional OEM Information In Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2), 2.1 (OSR2.1), and 2.5 (OSR2.5), not all files have the version stamp that is listed in the table. In OSR2.1 and OSR2.5, only files that were updated to provide support for the Win32 Driver Model (WDM) and Universal Serial Bus (USB) may have this version stamp. The other files have the same version stamps as the corresponding OSR2 files. You can view file version information by right-clicking a file in Windows Explorer, clicking Properties, and then clicking the Version tab. If there is no Version tab, there is no version information available for that file. Updates to Windows 95 OSR2 generally have a version number of 4.00.1112 or later. How to Enable DMA for a Hard Disk If you are using Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or a version of Windows 95 that includes DMA support, DMA is already enabled for your hard disk by default. If your version of Windows 95 does not include DMA support, use either of the following methods: Method 1 Obtain and install the most current driver for your motherboard that provides DMA support. For information about how to do this, consult the motherboard manufacturer, or view the documentation included with your motherboard or computer. Method 2 You can install any version of Windows 98 or Windows Me to obtain support for DMA. How to Enable DMA for a CD-ROM To enable DMA for a CD-ROM: If you are using Windows 98, Windows Me or a version of Windows 95 that includes DMA support, by default, DMA is available but is not enabled for your CD-ROM, and you should skip to step 2. If your version of Windows 95 does not include DMA support, use either of the following methods: Obtain and install the most current driver for your motherboard that provides DMA support. For information about how to do this, consult the motherboard manufacturer, or view the documentation included with your motherboard or computer. You can install any version of Windows 98 or Windows Me to obtain support for DMA. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System. On the Device Manager tab, double-click the CDROM branch to expand it, and then double-click your CD-ROM. On the Settings tab, click to select the DMA check box, and then click OK. Restart your computer, and then test to determine if your CD-ROM is working properly by using the CD-ROM drive. If you determine that your CD-ROM does not work properly with DMA enabled, disable DMA. To do so, repeat steps 2-4, but click to clear the DMA check box.     А!Limit Windows' Memory∙Windows Me will attempt to use as much memory as your system will allow, up to a point. However, on some processors, there is a point where the increase in memory returns a diminishing increase in performance. At some point, increases in memory can actually begin to decrease performance. On many machines, Windows Me, tops out performance at about 64MB. One way to control the amount of memory available to Windows is to launch MSCONFIG, and click on the General tab. One option is "Limit Memory to     А!. Set this number╘to 64, after checking this option. Reboot your machine and run some tests to see how Windows responds. The minimum amount of memory available to Windows Me should be no less than 32 MB. - Michael Vincent     А! Menu DementiaRWhen you click the Start button and begin navigating through the programs, it's very easy to slip from one option to another, thus losing one menu and popping into another. This "feature" has existed since Windows 95 and continues to plague many users. Using TweakUI (a free downloadable utility from Microsoft), choose the 'Mouse' tab. Move the slide-bar from 'Fast' to 'Slow' for the Menu Speed option and click Apply. Now the menus will pop up very slowly, so slow in fact, that you might want to click on the menu. If this is too slow, increase the speed. - Michael Vincent     А!Moving Groups Of Files┴In Windows 98 and Me, you can move a group of files, if they are displayed in icon view, within Explorer by left-clicking somewhere near the icons you wish to choose. Now, while holding down the left mouse button, drag your mouse and surround all of the desired files within a box. All of the files should now be selected. Left-click any of the files, while holding the mouse button, and drag them to their destination. - Michael Vincent     А!My Head Hurts!ўIf, after working at your computer for a few hours, you experience headaches or your eyes seem to be bothering you, you might have your screen resolution too high, or your monitor's refresh rate might be incorrect. The refresh rate is how often your monitor will replace the images on your screen. Right-click your desktop and bring up the Display properties. Click the Settings tab, and check your screen resolution. Try lowering your resolutions to make the icons and words bigger. Also, click the Advanced button and check the refresh rate for your monitor. Check with your monitor's manufacturer and find the optimum refresh rate for your monitor. If your setting differs, you may want to change it to the recommended rate. - Michael Vincent     А Windows ME    А(Create Your Own Shortcut┬In Windows Me, if you right-click on a desktop icon (not a shortcut), then select properties, a dialogue box pops up with a tab at the top called "Shortcut." If not already selected, select this tab. This option has a lot of fields, but the one in which we are interested is the one labeled "Shortcut key." Left-click in this field and select a keyboard sequence of buttons (preceded automatically by Ctrl+Alt). This will allow you to start that program using your chosen sequence. For example, you could select your game's icon, follow the procedures above and create a shortcut as Ctrl + Alt + G. When you depress these buttons together, your game will automatically start. - Michael Vincent     А(Disabling the System RestoreС1.Right click the My Computer Icon on the Destop and Click on Properties. 2.Click on the Performance Tab. 3.Click on the File System button. 4.Click on the Troubleshooting tab. 5.Put a check mark next to the Disable System Restore. 6.Click the OK button. 7.You will be prompted to Restart the Computer. Go to Tools, then Options and make sure that Digital Copying is selected within the CD Audio Tab. Click OK. Click the Copy Music button on the toolbar. The button will change to Stop Copy while copying. The music will then be copied automatically to your "My Music" folder within "My Documents." If, after pressing the Copy Music, you get an error stating that your CD does not support digital formats, and switches the format to Analogue, your CD player may not support Digital CD playing and the quality might not be as good. The files, however, will still copy. Remember to observe all copyright laws when duplicating music. - Michael Vincent     А Windows NT    А,Microsoft Access can't start┌After installing MS Office 97 on Windows NT machine, you can not start Access.
